Naples, Italy!!

Stop number 4 was Naples, Italy!

Naples is very big and spread out. We had wanted to go to Pompeii, but ended up not getting there. Instead, we just walked through the city and enjoyed the sights.

Looking out over the city with Mt. Vesuvius on the right-hand side:

Castello Aselmeyer:
It's a private palace built in the Neo-Gothic style.

Monument to the Martyrs in the Piazza dei Martiri:
On the top is a bronze statue depicting the Virtue of the Martyrs. The four lions at the base represent Neapolitan patriots who died during specific revolutions.

Fontana del Gigante (a.k.a. Fontana dell'Immacolatello)
It was designed in the 1600's by Michelangelo Naccherino and Pietro Bernini for the Royal Palace of Naples. In 1905 it was moved to this spot near the Castell dell'Ovo.

Castel Nuovo:

It is a medieval castle that was begun in 1279. I somehow missed getting any good photos of it.

A better picture of Mt. Vesuvius:
It erupted in A.D. 79, burying Pompeii in ash and soot and killing 3,000 people. As a result, the ancient Roman city (buildings, artifacts and people!) was preserved. I was super creeped out, but also excited and interested, at the thought of seeing it. I'm really sorry that we didn't get the chance.

Another view over the tops of the buildings:
